Problems Women Can Face Due to Lower Level of Testosterone

Testosterone is a male hormone. However, women also have minimum level of testosterone which helps in maintaining normal health. However, as compared to men this level is much lower. The hormone is produced by women’s ovaries and also both men and women produce little amount of this hormone from adrenal cortex. When anyone has shortage of this hormone then they will get tired easily, feel pain in various parts of the body and tingling sensation etc.

What are the causes of low testosterone in women?

The secondary female characteristics are due to production of estrogen, which every woman is well aware of. Estrogen is one of the important female hormone that is produced in the ovary, which decides various female characteristics including their emotion.

If the level of estrogen is low then it will be directly related to menopause. However, the presence of little amount of male hormone can also affect the physical and mental fluctuations in women.

In addition to that these hormones are also responsible for maintaining and repairing of reproductive tissues in women. These hormones are released in the bloodstream and also responsible for bone mass.

The reason for lower level of testosterone is generally associated with dysfunction of pituitary gland, which is located in the brain. This is a master gland, which controls the secretion of various hormones from different glands of our body.

What are various symptoms of lower testosterone in women?

The production of testosterone amount is very low among women. However, the symptoms of lower testosterone among women are more or less similar to men. Some of the common symptoms are as follows:

  • Sleeping disorder
  • Feeling of tiredness
  • Decrease interest in sex
  • Unnecessary weight gain
  • Increased accumulation of abdomen fat
  • Dry vagina and pain during sexual activity.

The reasons for all these symptoms also depend upon various other medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

What are the treatments for lower testosterone in women?

The testosterone products meant for men should never be taken by women as they can cause imbalance in physical and emotional health. Some of the common therapies recommended for women are as follows:

  • Women who are nearing menopause or already under menopause must get estrogen therapy with another hormone.
  • There are few over the counter supplements available. However, it must be taken with caution as some of these supplements are designed only for men.
  • Herbal products.
